I will use this blog for present my essay that I has wrote during I'm study at Bangkok University International College, I hope it gonna useful for some student that want some information about the article that relate for thier report. My essay mostly come from my opinion and some reference from some website.

The Penninsula Hotel Bangkok

The assignment of this week is the review of the Peninsula Hotel Bangkok. This is the hotel owned by Thai but being managed by the famous hotel chain of the world.
Again, I visited the hotel with my friends. Peninsula Hotel is similar to Oreintal Hotel and Mariot hotel in term of location on the Chao Phraya River which is close to major business centers, shopping and entertainment spots, this makes it convenience for their guests to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and spend their time doing business. Though it is on the other side of Bangkok, it is easily accessible by either sky train and shuttle boat. This is the only hotel which offers the arrival by helicopter on the rooftop helipad.
Compare with the Oriental hotel, Peninsula Hotel is newly constructed in a larger area so it offers more space and more facilities and the riverside spa right in the hotel building. For the guest rooms, there are varieties of rooms ranging from the 308 guest rooms of superior, deluxe, balcony and many types of 62 of several themed suites. Even the superior room is as large as 50 square meters with walk-in dressing area. The wellness facilities provide a large three tier swimming pool and three tennis courts. Due to the newly design, the architecture of the building is more stunning with the inspiration of its waved-shape design. The lobby is decorated with modern western together with some Thai furniture which is enhanced by the floor-to-ceiling glass overview the river that you can see the loves on the Chao Phraya River. At the River Bar that we relax with refreshing drinks and discussed about our assignment about the Peninsula. I accepted that this hotel contains a very good interior decoration even it may be less luxurious than the Peninsula in Hongkong that I had visited last year. Anyway the services of staffs of both hotels are similar.
During our visit I try to look around the place to study the information I got from the internet. I found that mostly the information that The Peninsula advertises is correct such as the pictures that present how luxurious it is and all the good services that it provide for their guests. The websites of the hotel looks very informative with many sections and beautiful pictures of the panoramic view of the river terrace and its facilities. It is very interesting to learn from the website that the hotel offers the Peninsula Academy Library which provides books, record, DVD and Thai rich heritage and culture.  It also provides Thai cooking class for those guests who enjoy the delicacy of Thai food and also the famous Thai flower arrangement. These activities are perfect for the visitors who would prefer to explore the Thai culture.
Our discussion is about it should provide more staffs in the lobby to serve the guests as we felt that there is not enough staffs during that time we visited the hotel on Chinese New Year holiday. Another is about the security system, we encountered bad experience when my friend parked the car the security guard ask for money for the Chinese New Year. This is not appropriate for the staff to do this. As I understand the hotel should have not trained staffs to ask for tip money as it depends on the discretion of the guest to offer depending on how they are pleased with the service.
The mission statement of the Peninsula hotel is “Aims to be the preferred 5-star de luxe city hotel providing superior facilities and services to the high-end corporate market, the who’s who in the Philippine society and its business leaders. Based on our brief experience at the hotel, we agree that it contains the value for guests both in house and city guests at the lele of five star hotel.
In conclusion, our visit of the Peninsula provides real life experience of the good services of the five star hotel. This makes us realized that to be a world class hotel, it is about how we can keep our regent with our quality of service. The Peninsula Bangkok shows me it can offer the same standard of service like its sister hotel in Hongkong. This is an important aspect which is the critical point of hotel business is well taken care of its customers.

The Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa Hotel
This week is another good opportunity that I was assigned to visit the Bangkok Marriott Resort and Spa hotel. The Marriott hotel is a kind of city resort hotel located not far from the business center of Bangkok. At first I planned to visit the hotel with my friend by car, but our second thought warned us that getting there may a little bit confusing because we have to cross the river to another side of the city on the way which we are not familiar with. So we decided to take BTS train to Tak Sin Bridge and took the shuttle boat provided by the hotel free of charge. This proved very convenience and cost us less plus we needed not be frustrated with the traffic jam.
The location of Marriott hotel is good as it is situated on the bank of Chaophaya River. It is a luxury five star hotel providing facilities for business or leisure travelers. Though the location is further down the river, it has the advantage of large area with a long riverside terrace. This makes it a perfect place for guests’ activities with the river view. It also has a large garden with many big trees and pools. It offers all the tranquility of a resort with the cool tropical gardens and river breezes. The spacious swimming pool and the outdoor jacuzzi is surrounded by the tropical gardens which offer perfect retreat from the daily stress life. The walk way has swimming pool on one side and garden at another side. The lush garden and lily pond are decorated with artifacts of Thai culture. I feel like I am not walking in Bangkok anymore but somewhere in Phuket or other resort towns.
Due to the large area, the building is designed as a low rise seven floor building and like other five star hotels, the decoration inside is in the theme of Thai and oriental design. In addition the lobby is quite large with many sofas and armchairs all around the place. Walking inside the bobby I found that this hotel has more simple decoration using soft tone of light and water therapy to make their guests feel relax.
For guests who desire for sightseeing, the Marriott hotel offers an array of enchanting historic palaces, monuments and temples. The temple of dawn is not far away while the Santa Cruz church is just a minute across the river.
Due to its location far from shopping centers, the Marriott hotel provides a small scale shopping mall right in front of the hotel together with banks, local restaurants and other shops to serve guests who prefer to spend their time within the hotel. Compared with other hotels nearby, it has complete facilities for guests to enjoy.
The spa facility is dominant as it is added with the river view which enhances the value of the spa services. Mandara spa is renowned for its special treatment and luxury facilities. The hotel also offers the dinner river cruise along the river, the Manohra Star which has kitchen on board. There are many food outlets in the hotel, the inside and outside buffet restaurants, a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant and the only Polynesian restaurant in Bangkok.
We stopped to have drinks at bar beside the river, Long tail Barr. This is my most favorite place of this hotel because it is beside the River which makes it perfect scene for drinking at sunset. Also we can see Bangkok Bridge and the view of traffics on the bridge. We discussed about what is the mission statement that the Marriott hotel tries to present. Later we found out that the mission statement of the Marriott hotel is “Our commitment is that every guest leaves satisfied." and the intermediate goal is “We are committed to being the best lodging and food service company in the world, by treating employees in ways that create extraordinary customer service” It is evident that this hotel try to present image of a luxury resort and spa within the chaos city, just you come over the bridge you can touch the good service of hospitality. Based on my brief visit I was convinced that the mission and goal are successfully achieved by the existence of its facilities and hospitality of staffs.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel
I first know Mandarin Oriental hotel when I was young watching the television talking about this hotel as the best hotel in the world with long history. This information is one of the reasons that inspire me to study in Hotel and Tourism management major. So when I received an assignment from the instructor to write up about this hotel, I am quite happy as I will have opportunity to learn more about it. As discussed with my friends, it would be better for us to write up about this hotel by visiting the place and using its facilities and services. However due to our limited budget we can gain our hand on experience only in beverage and food, not the guestroom.
Upon reaching the hotel, my first impression is on the welcome service as the staffs dressed in traditional Thai costume standing in front of doorway opened the door with Thai greeting “Wai”. Walking into the lobby I can see the interior decoration in Thai style with warm lighting in some areas. Trees pots and vases are placed in the lobby area and walkway. Though the space of the hotel is not as spacious as other new hotels nearby, it provides warm feeling for guests. All employees walked around wearing traditional Thai costume and greeted guests with Thai smile on their faces. All these appearance aggregately creates the warm hospitality of Thai culture which no other country can match with.
We decided to have lunch at Riverside Terrace restaurant which is beside the Chaopraya River and near the swimming pool. Looking from the restaurant I could see the view of all walks of lives along the river; boats crossing the river, many boys were swimming while different kinds of wastes floating beside them. The cool breeze of winter season and bright sunshine made us cool and nice. This setting is perfect for most visitors who came from Europe or US where sunshine is rare.  I also noticed a sign near a swimming pool disallowing non - guest using the facility. This shows the hotel’s attention about the security of its guests.
Having lunch at the restaurant enhanced my impression about the service of the hotel when the waiter first greeted us and led us to the table while another waitress opened the door for us. When we took the seats, another waiter came to us and gave us the menu. This shows how the hotel cares to make the guests comfortable even they are not staying in the hotel, by providing enough waiters to serve guests of all tables. During lunch a problem happened when my friend who is Israel and cannot eat seafood according to the Jews religion mistakenly ordered crab meat sandwich and later found out that he cannot eat it. Our discussion of how to resolve this problem attracted the attention of the waiter who came to us three times to offer help. This is very impressive for me.
After the main course I looked for dessert but I could not see the bakery items in the menu.  When I asked the waiter, he pleasantly brought me a plate full of all cakes for us to choose. My friends really appreciated the service so it is not only me who ordered cake but all of us tasted the cakes.

As we understand all the best services are not made from luck but it is resulted from the enduring efforts of all staffs that are well trained and hotel accumulates long time experience of the first class services. Though the hotel is Thai owned, it has been managed by western professional management. Oriental is the top of Thai hotel with the long outstanding service, its reputation is worldwide acclaimed and self creates the brand of Oriental among global hotel business. Though the competition nowadays is very fierce with the new coming hotels who built spacious and modern facilities within close vicinity but none of them can outcompetes Oriental.
In conclusion visiting Mandarin Oriental hotel is worthwhile as we gain real life experience of the good services of the five star hotels. This makes us realized that to be a world class hotel, it is not necessary to have a large space with grandiose decoration. The more important aspect is the hotel business is well taken care of its customers which is the critical criteria people rating the service of the hotel.

The Four Season Hotel
Last week when I visited Mandarin Oriental hotel with my friends, I was impressed with the superb service of this five star hotel. This week when the instructor asked us to write up about Four Seasons Hotel with the benchmarking with the Oriental, it is more difficult this time because we have to identify the difference and compare both hotels. I decided to visit Four Season hotel alone as I had been there before for my friend’s birthday party.
My first impression upon reaching the Four Seasons Hotel is its location in downtown with a walking distance from the shopping centers; Central World and Siam Paragon. Nevertheless it is also close to business centers of major commercial offices and embassies. Regardless of the crowded traffic in Ratchaprasong intersection, it is easily accessible from the BTS Ratchadamri station. Another advantage of Four Seasons Hotel is that it has the scenery view of golf club just across the street. Oriental hotel, on the other hand has an advantage of the riverside location so it can offers services and activities with the water view; dinner, river cruise etc. So when we compare these two hotels in aspect to location, each has different advantage. For guests who prefer river view and lives on the river, Oriental is their choice. Four Seasons is perfect for business guests who prefer resort hotel right in the city with easy commuting and relax atmosphere.
In term of Four Season’s guiding principle, it has the Golden Rule – to treat others as you wish to be treated – and as such. This is correct as I really received the warm treat starting from the bell boy and other staffs in the lobby. I also got the same level of service at the restaurant. As a five star hotel, it always maintains good service in accordance with its mission statement. The similarity of both hotels is the expression of Thai hospitality and culture; e.g. Thai smile, The Wai. In term of interior decoration, Four Seasons outcompetes Oriental as it is well decorated with Thai mural painting on the ceiling and wall. This attracts the interest the foreign guests in Thai culture. Oriental, on the other hand does not have beautiful paintings but it embraces the guests with its long history starting when Siam opened to foreign trade after the signing of the Bowring Treaty the sailors that manned the ships which conveyed this trade though Bangkok required accommodation on shore. To date it still contains legend such as the Author’s Lounge which is reputable and frequently visited by local celebrities while Bamboo bar is a long time symbol of the jazz bar in Bangkok. The position of Oriental is not to have a perception of luxurious Thai decoration but simple decoration of warm feeling so the guests feel like they are at home, not a five star hotel.
The mission statement of Four Seasons Hotel is “We have chosen to specialize within the hospitality industry by offering only experiences of exceptional quality. Our objective is to be recognized as the company that manages the finest hotels, resorts and residence clubs wherever we locate Achieving this mission is on the synergy of two factors; the local attribute; location, Thai decoration and Thai hospitality. The foreign attribute is the international management and worldwide brand of Four Seasons.
As both hotels are in service business, they greatly emphasize on people aspect. The mission statement of Oriental Hotel is Our Mission is to completely delight and satisfy our guests. We are committed to making a difference every day; continually getting better to keep us the best.” In addition is has the guiding principle for staffs to treat the guests at high level We will strive to understand our client and guest needs by listening to their requirements and responding in a competent, accurate and timely fashion. We will design and deliver our services and products to address their needs. In fact, we are committed to exceeding their expectations by surprising them with our ability to anticipate and fulfil their wishes”. Based on my experience the Oriental tries to make its guests feel that they are the important person that the staffs need to treat them like a king I believe that this mission is successfully achieved among local and international guests. The name Oriental is well accepted as the chain of luxury hotel with Thai hospitality among other western chains of hotel. Four Seasons has mission that “Our greatest asset, and the key to our success, is our people” Visiting both hotels, I can hardly differentiate the service quality as I received the same well treat from the staffs of both hotel.
